Hidden Gems: Best Viewpoints in Avalon Bay

While Avalon Bay has iconic landmarks like the Catalina Casino and Holly Hill House, you can also discover several lesser-known spots that offer breathtaking views of this island paradise. Let's explore some of these hidden gems that'll give you a fresh perspective on Catalina's beauty.

1.  Avalon Harbor Breakwater 

Fitness level - Beginner

For a sea-level perspective that's easy to access, head to the Avalon Harbor Breakwater at the Casino.

How to get there: Walk along the waterfront until you reach the Casino. Continue around the Casino and you'll see the breakwater. From there, you'll have an amazing view of Avalon Bay.

What you'll see: A unique view of Avalon from the water, boats in the harbor, and‌ sea lions lounging on the rocks.

2. Lover’s Cove Marine Preserve

Fitness level - Beginner

Pebbly Beach Road offers some beautiful unobstructed ocean views, particularly near Lovers Cove.

How to get there: Follow Pebbly Beach Road toward the boat terminal. Lover’s Cove is the bay just past the boat terminal. 

What you'll see: Rocky shorelines, crystal-clear waters, and a different perspective of the island's rugged beauty. Abalone Point is the rock that marks the end of Lover’s Cove and is home to several sea birds.

Pro tip: Keep an eye out for the bright orange Garibaldi as you walk toward Lover’s Cove. You will also see the majestic Kelp forests from the walkway.

Even a short hike out of town will give you absolutely amazing views.

3. Buena Vista Point 

Fitness level - Intermediate

Nestled in the hills above Avalon, Buena Vista Point lives up to its name with "good views" that are spectacular. This is a popular wedding spot because of the views!

How to get there: From the pleasure pier, walk up Catalina Street to Beacon and turn left. At Clemente, turn right then left on Wrigley Terrace Rd. Follow Wrigley terrace all the way to the Inn at Mt. Ada. When you get to the stairs at Mt. Ada, look across the street and take the stairs down to the cross.

What you'll see: Panoramic views of Avalon Bay, Lover’s Cove and on clear days, the mainland coastline.

Pro tip: Notice the Eucalyptus grove to the left above Lover’s Cove Marine Preserve!

4. Hamilton Cove Overlook 

Fitness level - Intermediate

Past Descanso Beach, you will find a unique perspective of the Catalina Coastline from Hamilton Cove Overlook..

How to get there: From the Pleasure Pier, walk toward the Casino, continue to Descanso Beach, taking the road past the zipline meeting spot. Walk up the canyon and around to the top of the hill. There's no sidewalk, so be mindful of golf cart traffic.

What you’ll see: Beautiful views of Descanso Bay, the Casino Building, and crystal clear waters.

Pro tip: Mule deer and Island fox call this canyon home. Keep your eyes peeled as you start up the hill.

5. Hermit Gulch Overlook

Fitness level - Advanced

For those who enjoy a bit of a challenge, the hike to Hermit Gulch Overlook is worthwhile.

How to get there: Hermit Gulch Overlook hike is approximately 3.4 miles round trip. Take the trail that begins at the Hermit Gulch Campground. It's a steep climb to the top but offers breathtaking views over Avalon and the Channel beyond. Come back down the same trail.

What you'll see: Sweeping views of the island's interior, Avalon Bay, and the vast Pacific Ocean.

Pro tip: This trail is part of the larger Trans-Catalina Trail. A hiking permit is required.
